It came to pass that in the days of Herod, there was a priest whose name was Zechariah, and his wife's name was Elizabeth. 

They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, and they were blameless.

Elizabeth was barren and advanced in years. However, an angel appeared to Zechariah saying, "Fear not, because your prayer was heard, and your wife Elizabeth will have a son, and you will call him John. And you will feel joy and gladness, and many will rejoice in his birth."

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a virgin named Mary, saying, "Greeting favored daughter; the Lord is with you."

She was troubled upon hearing these words and the angel said to her, "Do not fear, Mary; you have found grace with God. You will conceive and bear a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his Father, and He will rule the house of Jacob for eternity, and there will be no end to His kingdom."

And it came to pass that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, each to his own city. And Joseph went up out of the city of Nazareth into the City of David, which is called Bethlehem to be taxed with Mary, his espoused wife, being great with child.

While they were there, the day came that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

There was in the same country shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord came upon them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy."

"For unto you is born this day in the City of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

And the shepherds said one to another, let us go now into Bethlehem, and see this thing which is came to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

Narration:

There was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon: He was righteous and devout, and he looked forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.

There was also a prophetess named Anna who was of great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was 84 years old. She did not depart from the temple, worshipping in fasting and prayer night and day.

These two disciples of Christ would soon meet the Savior at the temple. This song is their testimony looking forward to His coming.

We know little about the actual night of the Savior's birth, and we know even less about the thoughts and feelings of his earthly parents. These next two pieces explore the experiences and testimonies of Joseph and Mary and their interactions with the infant Messiah.
